Carl Ladd

Carl’s knowledge of the ocean started as a young boy, fishing and sailing on the waters of coastal New England. At Prescott College he discovered the world of paddle sports, first with white water in the desert rivers of the Southwest, then the bliss of sea kayaking in the Sea of Cortez. He and his wife Sam co-founded Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures as a paddle sports school in 2001. Osprey’s initial focus was sea kayak education, but has since expanded to include surf kayaking and stand-up paddle-boarding (SUP). Carl’s coaching and instruction is constantly evolving. He is an American Canoe Association (ACA) L3 Surf Kayak Instructor Trainer, Level 4 open water Sea Kayak Instructor Trainer and a Level 5 Advanced Open Water Instructor. He has a patient and relaxed style of coaching and is always finding new and fun ways to transfer his knowledge of the sea and small paddle craft. Carl has lead trips all over the globe, from the Sea of Cortez, The Virgin Islands and the Exuma Islands to The Greek Islands, Portugal and Croatia. He can most often be found playing in the rocks and surf off the coast of his home in Rhode Island. Carl is proud to be a team paddler for P&H Kayaks and Werner Paddles.

Samantha Ladd

Sam got hooked on kayaking while working as a rafting guide on the Arkansas River in Colorado. She’s guided sea kayaking programs in Baja, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, the San Juan Islands, Greece, Portugal, Croatia, and across New England. She currently designs and teaches Osprey’s youth and adult environmental education, kayaking & SUP curriculums. She holds a degree in Adventure Education from Prescott College. Sam coordinates all of our custom tours; give her a call to set up a unique kayaking or SUP adventure for your friends & family. She is an ACA Level 4 Coastal Kayak Instructor, Level 3 Surf Kayak Instructor & Level 1 SUP Instructor.

Todd Johnstone-Wright

The ASC offers college students professional training, assessment and expedition programming in coastal, surf and whitewater kayaking. At his core, Todd is a coach whose focus is on creating highly differentiated and fun learning experiences for any ability level, both on and off the water. He is one of only three North Americans to successfully assess as a British Canoe Union (BCU) Level 5 Coach Sea and is an American Canoe Association (ACA) L5 Advanced Open Water Instructor Trainer Educator, ACA L4 Surf Kayak Instructor, ACA L4 Whitewater Instructor and serves as a senior instructor for SOLO Wilderness Medicine. Additionally, Todd earned his Master’s Degree in Education with an academic focus on the coaching process and holds awards in both the ski and climbing disciplines. He is a team paddler for P&H Kayak and Werner Paddles and an ambassador for Kokatat. Kayaking and mountain sports have afforded Todd the opportunity to paddle, climb and ski throughout North America, South America, Africa and Europe. He feels it’s a privilege to be present whenever and wherever learning is happening.

Ian Costanzo

Ian is an outdoor enthusiast; whether on the ocean or in the mountains, he pursues whatever adventure is at hand. Ian got the paddling bug while on a three-week kayaking expedition off the foggy, rainy coast of Maine. Ever since he has been dedicated to become an excellent paddler and coach. His patience and easygoing manner makes him an excellent instructor for beginners, while his drive and energy will push more advanced paddlers to step up their skills. A Westport native, Ian has explored the local waterways, and has been enchanted by their beauty and diversity (often while waist-deep in mud). He loves teaching kayaking and stand up paddling to people of all ages and showing them the wonders of the rivers and coastline he grew up on.

As an alumnus of the college’s Adventure Sports Program, he has a diverse background in outdoor sports and has accumulated a great deal of guiding experience. Most of all, Steve enjoys coaching introductory paddlers through the basics and getting new folks out on the water.
